Tom...I wish I did make an income with music...or enough to help out, anyway. But for some reason, it has not worked out for me that way. I am willing to let bygones be bygones.
Music was always with me from the time I was born, and it was fun for a while to be able to express myself on such a grand scale. There are moments I will always cherish, moments when I laughed to myself onstage with complete joy in my heart that I was able to perform that way for a living. That should be enough to last a lifetime, especially when I look at all the people who never had that opportunity.
We always want more that what life gives us...sometimes that's a good thing, because it keeps us searching and moiving forward, but sometimes it prevents us from seeing the ways in which our lives are already blessed in the moment.
I look at my son, and I know that in its own way life has been very good to me, and has given me riches in the expression of love. That is more than I ever asked for, and I am indeed very thankful.

I wonder if males who are exclusively vocalists would also be compared with other males who play instruments...maybe musical ability is secondary in the way some people view female artists...it reminds me of how I was compared with other female artists who came out at the same time as me in 1979...and only 1 out of 4 wrote songs, and none played any instruments. Anatomy is all we shared, along with the fact that we made records. It is sad to see this kind of thing still exists.

just coming back, i read the wikipedia entry on dianne heatherington, who has actually been dead for some years, and so whatever happens to her memory, god bless. i have downloaded all of violeta parra, who's been gone since 1967 and you can't get her music, or any significant part of it, except for the one song covered by everybody else ("gracias a la vida"). but in carolyne's case i would hope that sales of her music would actually benefit her for at least the next 40 or more years! put a smiley here somewhere.

http://www.raremp3.co.uk/search?q=dianne
this is a music blog where somebody is running a record by a canadian rock singer named dianner heatherington, and he says "she matches carolyne mas in my book" -- which is very flattering, no doubt, to dianne, but less so to carolyne. even so, he's the only blogger that actually runs any carolyne mas. the artist gets caught between the devil and the deep blue sea -- good to get the exposure, not so good missing out on some badly needed cash. "it's only mp3s" is hardly a valid excuse, as most people don't hear the difference and even seem to prefer the smaller format. ideally, all carolyne's output should be on itunes, and fans be encouraged to buy. european fans would know what they wanted, and carolyne would actually get SOME of the moolah...!

I saw you play at a festival called "Eight a Day for the 80s" at Michigan State University, in the summer of (I believe) 1980. I had never heard of you but was really taken by your set and bought your album (the one you now have pictured at the bottom of your home page).
Absolute favorite song was (and is) "Snow," very powerful.

Phil, I wish I could say I was playing somewhere, but I have let that part of my life go in favor of a quiet life spent with my family. I did briefly resurface to do a solo tour of Italy, one gig in NYC, and one gig at the Wonderbar in NJ. I had maybe 10 people there, and I think I brought 4 of them with me as guests. Not exactly a good sign. I decided then and there that it was futile for me to play as it was costing me more to get to the gigs thsn I could make from the 6 people paying at the door. So be it.

Both moved and thrilled to read about the upcoming cd's of your album(s?)! You rocked my world with the "Hold on"-album (I mean, "Running from the high life", "He's so cool" and the title track - just to mention a few!) which remains one of my favorite albums of all times. Also great to read about your animal shelter work. Doing similar work in Sweden I fully understand your passion about this issue. Again, great to hear from you and I'll continue visiting this page to keep up with your work and the (hopefully soon) coming cd's of your catalogue! Take care!

Carolyne,
Love your debut LP, brings back memories. What power! I can still remember the buzz around you at the time of it's '79 release. Is it available anywhere on CD? Can't find one anyplace. Nashville is still a cool city, as I live about 30 minutes away. Do you miss it? Hope this finds you happy and well. Sincerely,
Mike

Hi Carolyne,
It's been 28 years or so since you and I shared some recreational activities in a back studio at a radio station in Kingston, Ontario. We did an interview at about 2:30 a.m. that I still have. (Although it's on reel and I don't have one at present.) You were so warm, generous, and full of life that I had no idea the troubles you were going through. I wish I had been more perceptive. The image of the awesome rock star blinded me to the reality of the woman who was going through a very rough patch of life. If I had known I'd have done anything to help. We need more people like you.
It's about time your debut album appeared on CD. It won't be autographed like my vinyl copy, but I'll be grabbing the new digital version as soon as possible.
Lots of love,
Steve

Dear Carolyne,
I happended across your site as a result of a wikipedia inquiry. I am a fan, I ahd vinly copies of Hold On and your first Lp. By the way I am from Canada. Those albums were among my favourites. I enjoyed your passion and energy. I saw you perfom live at a university bar in London Ontario in the early 80's. At that time I was a DJ with the campus radio station - I personally tried to make sure your stuff was on our playlist. I am excited to heat that the first album will be re-issued on CD - hopefully it will make its way to the great white north! Anyway, best of luck to you and your family, especially with the situation with your animal sanctuary - don't let the bastards grind you down.
Peace
Sincerely,
Allan Strong

well hi carolyne, this is your long-distance friend tom now based back in wellington, new zealand again. my not-so-recent-anymore article about you on TELEPOLIS can still be found on line, though, so your german fans can read up on you, and that's "important". back here in kiwiland no one's ever heard of you, but i still have your original "bootleg" LP, and am in the process of digitising so many of my records, as i don't even have a record player. a friend here operates a small stereophonic FM radio station, so i think it would be nice to allow him to put this one record on for free, every once in a while -- just to expose those occasional listeners to the voice and sounds of carolyne mas. i've given people CD copies on auspicious opportunities, and they've all gone "wow! who IS this?" so NZ being what it is, two degrees of separation, and all that, you'll be building up a solid fan base here, as time goes by. all the best for the new year!

Thanks for all the honesty in your music.
I first heard Stillsane while I was sitting in a truck with the work crew on my first job in Toronto. The radio was the few good things about it. Your song was definitely cause to turn it up. I remember one guy liked Styx (barf!) but you made my short list.
All the best in 2010.

Love the website. I have scoured music shops and the web for your albums. Have the first on LP, second on cassette (worn) and a couple of others on CD. Managed to get a copy of Brand New World from someone in the UK. I think you are a sensational musician - thank you for making so many of your songs available on this site. I hope you have a fabulous Christmas and senational new year. Best wishes, Philip (Australia)

So Carolyne I'm 50 my wife of 8 yrs is 34. I was listening to your song snow and she was at a lost for words. I told her that song has haunted me since i first heard it. She has a beautiful voice but I dont have enough talent to figure all of it out. Would you be willing to share the chords so she can learn to sing it and enjoy it as much as I have?

Hey Carolyne, Well I finally got a new computer so I can finally send you Emails again. Hope all is well with you and your family. Since I last got in touch with you my mom passed away so I know the pain you must have felt losing your loved ones. It hurts! I am still listening to the CDs I recieved from you and am still enjoying them! I especially liked the DVD. It brought back fond memories of the JB Scotts concerts in Albany. I was hoping that once I discovered your website that I might just possibly see you in Concert again , but I guess that it's not in the cards. Thats life! I discovered a real gem of a 45 recently of Phobe Snow singing Baby Please and it's a DJ copy! Your recording is much better in my opinion. Well wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and much better New Year. Send me a line if you get a chance. Until then I remain your fan. God Bless Ray

Too bad it's "Modern Dreams" and not "Modern Dream" as listed. How that could be missed by the people reissuing it is beyond me. It's just as careless as leaving the 'e' off of my first name, which many record stores, the media, and some venues did when I used to perform. People have lost their eye for detail, one would surmise.

I saw you at J.B. Scott's in Albany, N.Y. in the late 70's, I think, and I have never heard a more beautiful song than "Snow", nor sung more beautifully. It was a favorite of my sister and brother-in-law, who just found out he has pancreatic cancer. He is 57. My sister said he just went to the stereo and put on your album with that song and they had a moment of rememberance and love of when they first met. Thank you.

Hi Carolyne ....
I recently resurrected my 29 yr old stereo to like-new sound and one of the first things I listened to was "Carolyne Mas" - the whole thing - It was sooooo nice to become reacquainted with this great work of yours. I recall at the time Rolling Stone reviewing you as some kind of "Springsteenette" but I don't think Springsteen ever had a song like "Snow" in his repertoire. I was in awe of how that song came out of nowhere on that album and eventually overruled the album's other songs that had been my favorites....Still does.....
.....And I remember being in the audience for an anticlimatic Steve Forbert show in Phila, held in the fallout of your salvo of songs that preceded him. I remember your sitting in the dark onstage on a stool with only your cigarette aglow....It's wonderful how replaying great songs can trigger a bunch of great memories.
Thanks! Jack

Carol,My beautiful Peach, first this Caryn nut job needs a LOONEY BIN!!!! I am sure you can bring charges against her but the scary thing is that somebody that bookey bookey is running around without a leash!! I am so sorry I haven't called but I had a really BAD funky pain period and between the narcotic patch and the heavy duty pain pills that by the time it was late enough to call you, I had faded to no energy. Kinda better now so I will call you as I hope I am not too late to help you on the Mercury thing (from reading your opening page maybe you don't need my help)! We shall see!

Just bought a record player at a garage sale and I showed my kids how vinyls worked. They were fascinated. It gave me a chance to go through my collection. Just finished listening to your debut album and Hold on. First heard you on the radio, some live concert where you went on a long rant against disco. Must have been a concert in Montreal or Toronto. I still have the tape, unfortunately no tape player. If you know the track I'm talking about point me in the right direction. I lost track of your carreer and never felt right about recording off the radio without supporting the artist in some way. Now that I've found this site I'll be able to make up for it.

"SADIE SAYS", just for Sadie!
I got in trouble at home
I got in trouble at school
I'm doing everything wrong
You know, I feel like a fool
But then Sadie says,
"Boy, don't you worry!"
Sadie says,
"It's gonna be alright."
Sadie is older and knows more than I do
And I believe what Sadie says is right.
I like to go downtown
I go there everyday
I like to raise a little hell
I like to piss away my pay.
Sometimes the smoke gets flying
And I'm down on the floor
Sometimes I say to myself
There must be something more...
But then Sadie says,
"Boy, don't you worry!"
Sadie says,
"It's gonna be alright."
Sadie is older and knows more than I do
And I believe what Sadie says is right.

I just heard your "Lovers from the Start" again on the radio - and I've always liked that song so much... :)
Now I'll check out some of your other songs...
Would love to feature your music (and/or YOU!) on our community podcast ( http://CastLine.ORG :)
Thank you for the music!

This whole darn website is an education in rock 'n' roll, and Ms. Mas is a master craftsman of same. Ho Lee Kaw.

Downloaded a bunch of mp3s. Your career is an education in rawknrawl. Some might say you write and rock as good as Springsteen, whome I love. But I might venture the following, that Springsteen is "the male Carolyne Mas". Sorry, that's how I feel. You have been the most overlooked talent in my musical history. In an alternate universe (and trust me, it's nice here ... ) Ms. Mas owns rock 'n' roll.

So glad I found this site. Long live the Internet. I never quite understood why your 1st album was not a hit record. It should have been. But then again, it's a mystery for me too why Elliott Murphy never got through.

The first Carolyne Mas LP is still etched upon my life. Those songs are part of my formative years ... much reasonable stuff since, but she was there while I was growing up - and i am forever in the debt of a great singer / writer who has touched my soul.

My sister had your Hold On album when I was a teenager and I loved it!!! I've always been amazed that your career didn't take you further. I'd like to say it was the industry's loss, but it was ours too. Do you have the "Hold On" Lp on CD for sale? I can't find it anywhere!

This is a miracle, finding this site. As an adolescent growing up in small country town Tasmania (the island at the bottom of Australia), your self titled album was my fave - nearly wore it out. Then, in 1981, I lost it...searched for a copy for years. Just downloaded the songs - and still remember every word. Your voice is still the BEST.
